The Wedding Gift ~ Kathleen McKenna

The Wedding Gift
By Kathleen McKenna
Published July 12th 2010 by Createspace

From GoodReads ~
It is a spine-electrifying supernatural tale where a huge Southern States mansion contains one of the most terrifying, violent and indeed psychopathic ghosts to haunt any town. It is also a murder mystery - why did Robina Willets apparently kill all five of her young children, and her husband, before stabbing herself to death? And, if you are in the camp of believing that 'justice .... just is not', then this will have you frothing at the mouth with righteous social fury. Add to that the vision of two exceptionally beautiful girls lying on a landing stage in the middle of a secluded lake, sleeping naked in the sun .... .... and then see if you can find any consecutive ten minutes in this book when you don't at least snicker at the heroine Leeann's sly, caustic, sometimes-knowing sometimes 'too stupid to live' commentary.
My Thoughts  ~
The GoodReads description of this book is way off.
I prefer the quote by Tim Roux,
author of Missio and The Dance of the Pheasodile,
which states "Leann wasn’t good enough for her upper-crust in-laws, so they gave her the mansion none of them wanted. Years ago, something or someone in the house killed Leann’s brother. Will its violent secrets kill her next?“ . . . a spine-electrifying supernatural tale where a huge Southern States mansion contains one of the most terrifying, violent and indeed psychopathic ghosts to haunt any town. It is also a murder mystery—why did Robina Willets apparently kill all five of her young children, and her husband, before stabbing herself to death? And, if you are in the camp of believing that 'Justice . . . just is not,' then this will have you frothing at the mouth with righteous social fury.”

Leann was from 'the wrong side of the tracks', hell,
her mother once worked for the Willets family.
[Cleaned up after the first murders, actually.]
Leann tells the story in The Wedding Gift.
I have a love / hate feeling toward Leann.
She is very smart, as convincing smart, in no way is she book smart.
She tells us that she is 'the prettiest girl that had ever been born in Dalton City, OK.'
[Just repeating what everyone in town says, of course.]
Leann is in love with Donny.
The boy that survived the night her brother died at the Old Willets house in 1986.
She has always been in love with him, but he up and got married.
Leann's best friend, Jessie, is feisty as hell.
[She reminds me of myself.]
I love that she doesn't have a filter between her head and mouth.
If Jessie thinks it, Jessie will say it!

George is from the highest ranks in town.
The murders in 1975 is the families biggest shock.
[The secrets that are hidden should be, though.]
Leann meets George when going to ask his family to write a check for the high school.
She is 17 years old. He is 26.
He insists on taking her to dinner, by plane, no less,
and buys her thousands of dollars worth of clothing.

When she ends up pregnant,
after believing that George was sterile from having the mumps,
[OMG, I thought.... This girl has no brain!]
Georges' first reaction, surprise, is to call her a slut and deny the baby.

When he proposes to her, in front of the high school, with a freaking TEN AND A HALF carat ring,
what else could she do then say yes?
[Uh, say no. Remember Leann, He called you a slut and you call him fat!]

After the wedding, George moves Leann in to the Old Willets house,
and things get real good.

Robina's ghost never left the house, and she want to show Leann why.
Shocking events lead to Leann finally being free.

Sophie and Carter

Sophie and Carter
By Chelsea Fine
Published by Acacia Publishing

From GoodReads ~
While other high school seniors are dreaming about their futures, Sophie and Carter are just trying to make it through each day. Carter is overwhelmed by issues at home as he struggles to support his mother. Meanwhile, next door neighbor Sophie is left to care for her three younger siblings in place of their absent and troubled mother. All that holds these two best friends together is each other, and knowing that each night they'll sit together on Sophie's front porch swing and escape from reality, if just for awhile. But as their relationship reaches a turning point and high school graduation nears, will their friendship become something more?

My Thoughts ~
I wish that I had a Carter growing up!

“They’re not really homes. More like houses where we sleep.
Where we eat—if we’re lucky. Where we cry and fight.
Where we bleed and break. Where we cower and scream.
Where we give up. Where we sigh.
Where we barely survive.” ~ Carter

Sophie's mom is a hooker.
Gone for first days, then weeks and now months.
Now Sophie raises her 2 brothers and sister alone.
Well, except for Carter.

“If you're referring to yourself as a 'grown-up', then you're still totally a kid. 'Grown ups' call themselves adults” ~ Sophie to Michael

Carter's dad, the man that he calls
"The man who fathered me",
used to beat Carter and his mom.
Carter has a long scar from where his dad attacked him with a butcher knife.
Carter's mom has brain injury from the beatings.
Carter takes care of her alone.
Well, except for Sophie.

“He's not the most popular guy in school. He's not the hottest guy to ever live.
But to me, he's everything." ~ Sophie

Carter and Sophie are best friends, in secret.
No one at their high school knows it, but they meet, ever since they were thirteen,
on Sophie's front porch swing.
Every. Single. Night.

As the last few weeks of high school go past,
we get to watch Sophie and Carter realize that they are in love.
Carter says it first, after he sees Sophie have a touching moment with his mom.
Sophie, though she knows she loves him too, replies with "I know."
Later that night, after they have both gone to bed, Sophie has a plan.

She sneaks out of her bedroom window and makes her way to Carter's.
She climbs in his bed and tells him that she loves him, too.
Then, the sweetest part of the book IMO,
she kisses each of his scars.

"I never...." she says between kisses, "got to kiss your hurt away..." Another kiss.
"when we were little..." her lips move to my forehead. "and I always wanted to." ~ Sophie

I die!! How epically sweet was that?!?

The next day is graduation.
Neither have any family to watch.
After, Carter has a surprise for Sophie.
A picnic under the Big Oak where they used to meet.

The next day, after a tragic accident the night before,
Sophie and Carter pack up The Littles and drive away from the pain.
"Yeah, we won't have much as we start this new life.
But we'll have us.
We'll have love.
We'll have family.....
Carter Jax has already made all my dreams come true.
And it's only the beginning." ~Sophie
The only reason that this is not a FIVE STAR book,
is because I want a sequel!

The Seven Year Witch ~ By: Jodi Redford

The Seven Year Witch ~ That Old Black Magic Book 2
By: Jodi Redford
Published March 23rd 2011 by Samhain Publishing, Ltd.

From GoodReads ~
"After this much foreplay, something’s bound to combust.

As head mistress of Beaumont coven house, Clarissa Miles has perfected two things: keeping her sister witches from accidentally turning innocent bystanders into toads, and resisting the sexy overtures of her familiar, werewolf Logan Scott.
But her resolve is vanishing—fast. Seven years ago she sold her soul to save her father, and that contract is coming due. The allure of spending her last days indulging in some dirty, naked loving is too tempting to resist.
Logan has patiently ridden out the past seven years, content to do Clarissa’s bidding and ignoring his consuming need to mark her as his. Now that the ban on witch/familiar fraternizing has been lifted, he’s off the leash and ready to launch a full-on sensual assault on her defenses. They’re destined mates, and he’ll do whatever it takes to convince her.
It’s delightfully easy to get her in bed. Get at her heart? Not so much. Especially when a deadly predator stakes its claim on her…and Logan faces a battle not only to win her heart, but save her soul.
Warning: This book contains a villain with more personalities than Sybil, a witch in search of redemption and a dirty-talking werewolf hell-bent on claiming his mate in every wicked, sexy way possible. Spontaneous howling may occur."

My Thoughts ~
After just finishing That Voodoo You Do, I got the pleasure of reading the next book in the series.

Bravo, Jodi Redford!
You did it again.
I read this book in less then 10 waking hours.
Couldn't. Put. It. Down.

In this book, Clarissa and Logan are falling in love. Logan knows it. Clarissa is avoiding it.
After getting a note from Seven, the person she sold her soul to seven years ago, Clarissa is faced with the fact that she has 7 days left to live.

I love the interaction with Clarissa's father
and the reason she is under contract with Seven is heartbreaking.
When Clarissa decided to try to save others from his contract, I cheered for her!

Jodi's way of including the seven deadly sins was wonderful.
The descriptions of all of the multiple personalities of Seven,
Lust, Envy, Gluttony, Wrath, Sloth, Pride and Greed,
were amazing. She really seems to capture them well.

The seduction between witch and wolf is amazing.
[I love a good smutty book!]
You never forget that Logan is a wolf.

I can't wait to read the next book in That Old Black Magic series.

Hurricane ~ By: Jenna - Lynne Duncan

Hurricane
By: Jenna - Lynne Duncan
Published August 9th 2011 by Divertir Publishing LLC

From GoodReads ~
"Adriana couldn’t decide what was worse—that Hurricane Katrina was heading for New Orleans, or that she might not survive her kidnapping to see its potential effects. She had trusted Hayden, even fallen for him, and now he and his brother Luke were taking her deeper and deeper into the Bayou. Why had two of her classmates, the mysterious Boudreaux brothers, kidnapped her? Why had Adriana’s dreams started predicting the future? Most importantly, would she make it out of the Bayou alive…"

My Thoughts ~
Slow to start, but a pretty good book overall. This is by no means a can't-put-it-down book. In all actuality, if I wasn't reviewing this book, I doubt I would have finished it. I'm glad that I did though. That just lets me know that sometimes I just need to grin and bare it and maybe it will work out in the end. The history of New Orleans is spot on and the remains that Katrina left are heartbreakingly real.

One thing that I didn't like was that right when the book held my total attention, it ended. I know there are other books in this series, but I was left asking questions about everything. Hopefully, answers will arise out of the sequel.

I rate this book 3/5 stars.
